He’ll Sniff Out the Clues

Well this is perhaps something different… Fables: The Wolf Among Us is a comic book based on a video game based on a comic book. All the Worlds and a Rabbit

The big-name comic book publishers like to do things big. Really big: Whole universes have been made and destroyed on a regular basis. Now DC Comics is on the move again with The Multiversity, a new full-color series that tells of  a massive threat to all 52 of the known universes in the DC world. Created by superstar comics writer Grant Morrison (Animal Man and so much more…), the story goes like this: “The Multiversity is more than just a multi-part comic-book series. It’s a cosmos spanning, soul-shaking experience that puts YOU on the frontline in the Battle for All Creation against the demonic destroyers known as the Gentry!  In issue #1, pencilled by superstar artist Ivan Reis (Aquaman, Justice League), President Superman of Earth-23 uncovers a threat to all Reality so apocalyptic it will take a team of incredible heroes from across the Multiverse to face it – including Captain Carrot, like you’ve never seen him before!” Oh really now? More 80’s furry comic nostalgia! Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew was, of course, DC Comics jumping head-first into the growing funny animal scene with a Warner Brothers meets Superheroes pastiche created by Scott Shaw! and Roy Thomas. Now DC have brought together the original full-color issue #1 through #20 of CC in a new trade paperback, Showcase Presents: Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew. The collection also features a team-up with the original Teen Titans, as well as the special and little-seen 3-issue Oz/Wonderland War mini-series (which the Super Rabbit and his cohorts had a large part in). It’s available for order now, and hits the shelves this August.

All This For a Snack?

Comic books are getting silly again, or at least getting weird. Later this month DC Comics presents the premier issue of  a new bi-monthly full-color series, Scooby-Doo Team-Up. Here’s what they say about it: “Rumors of a giant bat-creature bring Scooby and the gang on the run—but Batman and Robin are already on the trail of their old foe, the monstrous Man-Bat. Before long, the crooks behind a fake bat-creature will come face-to-face with the real thing…with the good guys caught in the middle!” Got that? It’s written by Sholly Fisch and illustrated by Dario Brizuela. In the 2nd issue, Scooby-Doo teams up with Ace the Bat-Hound to fight the evil Scarecrow! Yes, really.

Furry Villains Attack!

As part of their massive world-shifting story-arch known as The New 52, DC Comics have created a mini-arch known as Forever Evil. What would happen if all the world’s superheroes one day simply… vanished? Answer: The super villains would take over! Among those villains, of course, are several well known anthropomorphic ones, including Gorilla Grodd (who often goes up against The Flash) and the Cheetah (sworn enemy of Wonder Woman). Each villain will be getting their own issue to shine in as part of this big comic book extravaganza. Look for them at your local store starting in September. (Specifically, Gorilla Grodd in The Flash #23.1, written by Brian Buccellato with art by Chris Batista; and the Cheetah in Wonder Woman #23.1, written by John Ostrander with art by Victor Ibanez. Also look for Detective Comics #23.4 (by Frank Tieri, Scot Eaton, and Jaime Mendoza) featuring the Man-Bat!)

All the Mightiest Pets

After a successful run of the DC Super Pets comic book series, now DC comics bring us the DC Super Pets Character Encyclopedia, coming later this month as a full-color trade paperback.  This is from the pre-order page at Amazon: “Every super hero needs a Super-Pet! All Your Favorite Fables

One of those “not exactly furry, but boy does it have a lotta furries in it” kind of things: Bill Willingham’s award-winning comic book series Fables. Now publisher Vertigo have announced the Fables Encyclopedia: Deluxe Edition, coming in hardcover this October. The Return of Captain Carrot — Sort Of…

Our thanks (we think) to EbonyLeopard for pointing this out to us…  In keeping with the current “New 52” line of re-boots for venerable comic book stories and characters, DC Comics brings us… Captain K’Rot. Yep, it’s Captain Carrot, the 1982 super-funny-animal creation of Roy Thomas and Scott Shaw!, re-imagined as “a borderline psychotic, booze swilling, whore-mongering rabbit” for the new science fiction comic book series Threshold (from Keith Giffen and Tom Raney). Some are saying this is all inspired by the new (and popular) kick-ass version of Rocket Raccoon that has been appearing in Marvel Comics’ Annihilation: Conquest. Others are saying it’s a re-incarnation of good old Bucky O’Hare, created by Larry Hama and Mike Golden back in the 1980’s. Either way, you can decide for yourself. Threshold hits the stands in January, and Captain K’Rot makes his first appearance in issue #3 in March. Read more about it at Comics Alliance, too.
