Ooo, What Do YOU Think?

For as long as KaBOOM! Comics have published the Adventure Time comic tie-in series (and that’s a few years now!) there have been back-up stories from the Land of Ooo in several issues, created by other comic book writers and illustrators. Well now KaBOOM! (an imprint of BOOM! Studios) have made that the main focus of their new full-color Adventure Time Comics series, an anthology featuring three short stories by different creators in each issue. From an article at the A.V. Club: “The first issue of Adventure Time Comics features stories by Gronk’s Katie Cook, Tiny TitansArt Baltazar, and MaakiesTony Millionaire, with a Nick Pitarra cover homage to Action Comics #1 that spotlights how different artistic sensibilities reinterpret these designs… Future contributors to Adventure Time Comics include Jeffrey Brown, Terry Moore, Kelly Thompson, and Box Brown.” It’s on the shelves now.

Little Doggie, Big World

Recently at Comic Con we came across a new comic book company, Contraband Comics. Among the titles (or rather covers!) that caught our eyes was a new full-color one called Pugly, “A new comic book misadventure from writer Jon Goff (Destiny, Spawn) and artist Jim Hanna (Jack Rabbit)”. Meet Frank, a pug-dog whose only goal is to enjoy life in his huge palatial home with his loving elder mistress, Mother. Unfortunately that’s complicated when she passes away — and it only gets more complicated when she wills her entire vast fortune to him! As he explains, that’s just the beginning of Frank’s adventures in a much larger world. Take a look over at Contraband’s web site to learn more about him.

Fighting Like…

Space Cats In Space! is the name of a new animated computer game, currently under development. They have a Kickstarter campaign in place to try and finance the next step in the process. “An advanced twin-stick shooter space epic, SpaceCats In Space! Follows the kingdom of Meowfyre’s rebellion against the dogs of the Grolich Empire. Bomber strikes, wingman assistance and RPG-like leveling are all tools at your disposal in the battle to stop Oberluft Kommandant Arnuld Von Schloss and the vast Grolich war machine. Featuring animated cutscenes and full voiceover to immerse you in a World War II inspired space battle of cats versus dogs!” This is not the most “serious-minded” of fighting games out there… if the title wasn’t a giveaway, check out the intro video at the Kickstarter page! (Also this is obviously more for “cat people”!) As we write this there is just over a month left in their current crowd-funding campaign.

Reigning Cats and Dogs

(Sorry: We didn’t come up with that one!) Legend is a new full-color science fiction series from Z2 Comics. “What if a biological terror agent wiped out most of humanity, and our domesticated animals were left in charge? How would our dogs and cats set about ruling and rebuilding the world? Ransom, the leader of the Dog Tribe, has been murdered by a creature known as the Endark. An English Pointer named Legend reluctantly rises to lead in his place, vowing to kill the monster once and for all. From acclaimed novelist Samuel Sattin and award-winning illustrator Chris Koehler comes Legend, where cat technology rules, dogs partner with hawks, and humans may be the most beastly creatures of all. ” According to Bleeding Cool, the first run of issue #1 has already sold out and gone to a second printing. My, people like their post-apocalyptic pets, don’t they? Check out the article for a preview trailer created by Z2 as well.

Cats Dream of Electric Dogs

You gotta notice a story with an introduction like this: “Catland Empire is a graphic novel melding of a Phillip K. Dick story with a Saturday morning cartoon.” That’s how Drawn & Quarterly describe this new hardcover graphic novel by pop artist Keith Jones. “There will exist a future world where ‘human beings have become empty husks stripped of all memory when it comes to things like how to have fun and play games,’ or so says Mr. Space to his associate Mr. Time. The solution? Get the cats to teach humans how to have fun again. This is all the Cat People do with their lives. They are the fun and game masters. What follows is a tangled web of psychedelic science fiction blending anti-consumerism politics and intergalactic liaisons between cats and dogs, bitter enemies kept secret from each other to avoid a planetary race war.” Look for this new book to hit the shelves in early June.

Portraits of Your Pet in Paint

Sarah Prescott is a professional painter who specializes in watercolor — and these days, in original pet portraits. “The daughter of renowned artist Larry Gluck, Sarah’s love for painting developed as a child growing up around the smell of turpentine and oil paint in her family’s living room, which doubled as her father’s art studio. In 1975 Sarah’s parents founded Mission: Renaissance Fine Art Classes and, after graduating from Hoover High School and attending Cal State Northridge, Sarah formally trained in her father’s method of art instruction and opened  her own Mission: Renaissance studio in La Canada in 1992. It was through teaching children that she discovered her passion for watercolor. ‘The kids I taught were so full of life, it inspired me to paint children and watercolor was the perfect medium.’ She went on to paint commissioned works for her many clients and also vignettes and landscapes. The Prescott family’s 3 dogs inspired her ongoing series of animal portraits and the formation of her company: Unfurgettables.” Her web site shows many of her works, available not only as originals but on bookmarks, note-cards, and other such items.

Shapeshifters Have Rights Too!

Imagine a world with no domesticated dogs — only were-dogs. That’s what the artist known as Kez thought up for his largely monochrome on-line comic Until The Last Dog Dies. “Port Jude is a utopia… if you’re human. In a world split down the middle between humans and dog shapeshifters, there is little justice to be had when domesticated dogs have no rights, no citizenship and no life to call their own. Cage is a wild dog who has always seen himself as free, until he strikes a bargain with the devil in the form of a wealthy businessman named Dmitri Molokov. Now, he must risk his life with the cruelties of the illustrious dog fighting rings for his one shot at a better life for himself and his family.” The official web site has the continuing comic, as well as backstory and a link to an introduction video on YouTube.
