Somehow we missed this when it came around last year. Team Taekwondo is a black & white graphic novel series for younger readers, published by Rodale Kids. The first volume is called Ara’s Rocky Road to White Belt.  It goes like this: “Ara is the odd turtle out in his family, preferring his rock collection to new or wild adventures—until he meets Baeoh, a confident tiger who practices martial arts. Unsure if he has what it takes to join Baeoh’s taekwondo team, Ara must learn how to come out of his shell, persist through failure, and accept the help of his new friends to complete the Tiger Fitness Challenge.” They go on further to say, “The Team Taekwondo series combines the appeal of graphic novels and martial arts to deliver action-filled, character-building stories. Each book also includes one free lesson at any participating licensed ATA Martial Arts location.” Each book in the series is written by Master Taekwon Lee and Jeffrey Nodelman, and illustrated by Ethen Beavers. Now the second volume, Baeoh and the Bully, was just released to stores as well.

Help the Fighting Monkey

Jed Henry of Provo, Utah is a big fan of Japanese wood block artwork — so much so that he’s joined up with on-line efforts to preserve and encourage the craft, which has suffered in Japan of late. Now he’s taken things up a notch or two and created Edo Superstar, a new animated game that incorporates the wood block style. In it we meet Masaru, a headstrong young Japanese monkey who quits the shadowy world of ninja warriors to become a fighting hero in the light of day, working his way toward the capital city in his quest for glory. Edo Superstar is being developed both as a computer game and as a smart phone app. Jed Henry and artist Dave Bull have set up a Kickstarter campaign to finance the project, and the perks for various levels of contribution include various t-shirts and art print sets. The Kickstarter page also includes several animated video previews of the game.

Samurai Secrets of the Animals

Tiny Warriors looking to take on the World

Tiny Warriors is a new 2D animated series in development at Toonzone Studios. Created by David Feiss (who brought us the hit TV series Cow and Chicken), this new show tells the tale of four young animals — Taekwand0 Monkey, Kendo Porcupine, Aikido Elephant, and Kung Pow Chicken — who study together in a forest dojo under the tutelage of Master Moose. In order to protect the ultimate martial arts move, “The Ancient Touch”, our heroes must band together and fight against Master Moose’s former friend and now arch-rival, the Gerbil. You read it here folks. Tiny Warriors is currently seeking distribution, as well as licensing agreements for the massively popular martial-arts tie-in market.
